Community Educational Programs

Machon L'Torah's philosophy since its inception has been to broaden and expand the availability of Jewish adult education to all segments of the Jewish community throughout Michigan. To maximize educational opportunities, Machon L'Torah works in cooperation and in conjunction with various Jewish organizations such as the Jewish Community Centers around the State, the various Hillel houses and Hillel groups on Michigan campuses, numerous synagogues, fraternities and social groups, and the National Jewish Outreach Program (NJOP).

Hebrew Crash Course

Many Jewish people who wish to participate in a family Seder or synagogue services find it an awkward experience due to their unfamiliarity with the Hebrew text. They are thus prevented from joining and becoming an integral part of the Jewish community. To remove this obstacle from their way back to their tradition, Machon L'Torah has led a drive for many years to teach any Jew who wishes to learn how to read Hebrew.

Home Study Groups

Over our many years of experience in adult Jewish education, we have found that the most productive and enjoyable way to enrich Jewish knowledge is by holding exciting homestudy groups. A few couples or a number of single friends and acquaintances get together once or twice a month for a cozy informal evening of discussion and exploration of intriguing Jewish topics. They may include questions of ethics, current events, history, or even texts such as the Bible, Maimonides, or the Talmud.

Jewish History Lecture Series

Jewish History is one of the most deficient areas in Jewish education. Not only unaffiliated Jew generally lacks this knowledge, but even Jews well educated in a number of other areas of Jewish study seem to be quite unfamiliar and sometimes even confused about their own history. To correct this gap in Jewish knowledge, Drs. Mark Blumenkehl and David Weingarden initiated an extraordinary opportunity to study Jewish history with one of today’s most prominent

Lunch & Learn

In the mid-1980s, Machon L'Torah initiated an extensive Lunch and Learn program now known as "The Torah Exchange." The Torah Exchange is designed for professionals who wish to enrich their busy lives and hectic schedules with some wholesome Jewish knowledge.

To accommodate the professional community, Machon L'Torah organizes, upon request, a group of interested parties in a geographically convenient location. Machon provides a Rabbi/Lecturer who tailors the discussions to the needs and wishes of the participants. A catered lunch is served, followed by the discussion or presentation.

Medical Ethics Conferences

The Greater Detroit Jewish community is blessed with many physicians. Over the years, many of them have requested assistance and guidance in regards to medical ethics issues. To accommodate these requests, Machon L'Torah has initiated several study groups in various hospitals throughout our region for healthcare professionals. Participants in those sessions have suggested, and then organized in addition to the regular study sessions, a once a year Jewish medical ethics conference. The initial success prompted the decision to make it a permanent annual event.

New Americans Programs

Since the early '90s, the Greater Detroit area has absorbed a significant number of Jewish immigrants from the former USSR. As soon as we realized the magnitude of this influx of Jews who were robbed of their birthright to know and study their rich heritage, we organized a variety of classes, educational deli-dinners, Jewish social events, and Holiday and pre-Holiday festivities. With the help of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, we have been successful in reaching out and educating the newly arrived American.

Efforts are currently underway to focus on specific interest groups from within the general new immigrant population. Machon L'Torah works in conjunction and in cooperation with Project Achim, an umbrella organization for outreach efforts to the newly arrived immigrants that includes Young Israel of Greater Detroit, Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, NCSY, Yeshiva Gedolah, Akiva Hebrew Day School, and the Merkaz.

Torah Team

The popular demand for Jewish knowledge and Torah study has risen in recent years to unprecedented levels. To adequately deal with this phenomenon, Machon L'Torah, the Jewish Learning Network of Michigan, established the Torah Team program. This program is designed to address the specific educational needs of each participant. The need for this unique program became self-evident when we at Machon L'Torah realized the wide range of educational backgrounds of those seeking to better understand their roots, and heritage. The Torah Team provides an opportunity to reconnect its participants with the brilliance, insights and guidance of the Torah.

Uniquely Ours

By popular demand, Machon L'Torah several years ago established the Uniquely Ours program, a program for women by women.

Uniquely Ours provides a form of expression for Jewish women in a comfortable and productive setting. The events, held periodically, host women artists, speakers, singers, and educators. Each unique program provides an array of exciting events that attract well-attended audiences.

Weekend Retreats

Although Machon L'Torah offers a wide range of educational opportunities, this program is truly special and different. Its uniqueness is primarily due to its offering an opportunity of total immersion for an entire weekend in the wellsprings of Jewish wisdom. Individuals and/or families join a larger group of other Jews of diverse backgrounds and from various locations throughout Michigan for a weekend that combines physical relaxation, intellectual stimulation, and spiritual refreshment.

The weekend is held at an elegant hotel within an hour’s drive from Metro Detroit. The event features world renowned lecturers, scientists, rabbis and authors. The agenda is tailored to the specific needs of the attendees, providing topics of interest to those with absolutely no Jewish educational background as well as to those with some or significant Jewish knowledge.

All food served is catered by one of the finest Kosher caterers in our community. For couples with children, special babysitting arrangements are made available.

Women's Holiday Specials

This is one of Machon L’Torah most popular, long standing programs. Initiated to meet the needs of the Oak Park and Southfield Communities’ Jewish women who expressed a need for a spiritual, elevating experience during the Jewish Holiday seasons and other special occasions. Machon L'Torah periodically holds (before or on a given Holiday) a special Saturday afternoon program for women. The programs generally involve a prominent Rabbi speaker, followed by presentations by local talented women. In addition, renowned lecturers who visit our region are drafted for a special lecture to further educate and lift the spirits of this program's participants.
