Machon L'Torah
Books, Tapes and Video Library

Concept

"The People of the Book" is a term often used to describe the Jewish People. In spite of the influx of multitudes of high tech methods of information, there is still something special about "real" books. A book may be picked up at anytime, easily opened to a specific page, and comfortably read while sitting at a table, resting on a couch, or just before falling asleep. There is something invaluable to the ability of reading a few pages, taking a break, digesting the acquired knowledge, and then, when ready, continuing with the next segment - the next chapter.

Although in the not so recent past. Well-written Jewish literature in the English language was quite scarce, in the past two decades things have changed dramatically. High caliber, superbly written Judaic literature is now readily available.

With the unprecedented surge of interest in Jewish studies that we have seen throughout the Jewish world and specifically in the United States, it became quite clear that a well-run and constantly updated Jewish book library would greatly benefit Metropolitan Detroit’s Jewish community. In addition, many, if not most, people spend between one-half to two or more hours a day in their car while driving to and from their workplace - precious time that could be used to accumulate some knowledge. To enable our community to have easy access to quality Jewish works, both in book form and on audio/video tapes, Machon L'Torah established the Lillian Saltsman Book Library and the Abraham Korman Tape Library. The libraries contain thousands of books and tapes on subjects such as history, fiction, Jewish philosophy, prayer, Jewish law, ethics, Bible, Talmud and more. The library is run by a part-time librarian and a number of volunteers.

History
The library was established in the former Young Israel of Oak Woods in 1982 by Naomi Handler, Marcia Scheer, and Patty Ross. Occasional library luncheons were held under the direction of Sharon Last to support the library and its activities. The library project was enthusiastically supported by many people in our community who volunteered in a variety of ways and contributed to its popularity and success. For the past 13 years, the library has been housed at Machon L'Torah's Learning Center in Oak Park, MI. Due to its expansion, it is currently in a temporary location. Plans for a brand new library building have been drawn. The necessary land for its construction has been acquired due the generosity Mr. Alex Saltsman. Machon L'Torah is currently searching for donors to enable us to complete our building plans for this great project.
